Shoppers at the Clearwater shopping mall in Johannesburg, can make calls on any of the country’s networks - thanks to AlanDick's innovative In-Building cellular technology. The 60,000 square metre
mall, which boasts an internal atrium and a
stunning glass and steel construction, is
the first site in South Africa to benefit
from a Tri-Band In-Building active cellular
distribution system. AlanDick was called in to develop an innovative signal transmission system capable of carrying not only GSM 900 and 1800 signals from Cell-C, MTN and Vodacom, the three existing South African carriers, but also 3G signals from the then-unlaunched UMTS networks. AlanDick's
engineering staff created an in-depth GSM
coverage map for the mall from the
architect’s AutoCAD drawings. The result,
was a coverage footprint map for the
different wavebands involved, quickly
allowing staff to draw up a bill of
materials required for the project. |
The
active signal distribution system for the
mall uses space-age technology to ensure
that both GSM and 3G signals radiate to the
areas where they are needed. A fibre optic
cabling system converts cellular signals
from the networks’ base stations, which are
installed on-site, and radiates the light
signal around the mall. The
light signals are intercepted at various
points around the mall and converted into
electrical signals for transmission via
industry-standard CAT-5 cabling to the
radiating heads, which retransmit the
cellular signals as normal. Using an
AlanDick-supplied fibre optic and
second-tier CAT-5 cabling system allowed the
developers to ensure the best possible
cellular coverage for mobile users inside
the mall when it opened. The cellular technology now in day-to-day usage at the Clearwater Mall is some of the most innovative in the world, yet has been designed for maximum reliability without breaking the bank. |
