Driving forward efficient buses and other public transport in South Africa

AlanDick is collaborating with ACIS, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) systems. Our mission: to understand and respond to the requirements of public transport operators and users. Through our alliance, we are ideally positioned to offer a customised comprehensive real time bus and revenue management system for public transport systems in South Africa.

What this means in simple terms is more intelligent, cost-effective, user-friendly and truly interactive bus services that would surely make even the most impassioned car driver consider leaving their own four-wheels at home.

AlanDick and ACIS have signed a Partnership Agreement where AlanDick together with its empowerment partner New Heights Pty Ltd will act as the prime contractor on projects in the Republic of South Africa. The solutions that we are offering have the potential to overhaul and modernise the public transport services currently being offered in South Africa in time for the soccer World Cup in 2010.

A RTPI system improves public transport through the application of a whole portfolio of information and communications technologies. Global Positioning System (GPS) technology monitors the movements of buses along their route. This real time information can then be related to the travelling public via a whole host of media, from bus stop displays to web pages - and even text messages.

At its most straight forward, this means simple LED screens at a bus stop: at its most impressive, a passenger can choose to receive a personalised SMS (text) message when their bus is 10 minutes away from their nearest stop. Users with an appropriate key fob can even activate talking bus stops – a particularly useful technology for the visually impaired.

Other features of intelligent buses include the ability to request priority crossing at traffic lights at certain busy times of day or when they are already delayed; and a completely integrated and secure paper and smartcard ticketing system.

It has already been proved in the UK that providing real time information makes travelling by bus a much more appealing option to the public and can ensure higher levels of efficiency for bus operators.
