AlanDick wins major RCI contract with BAE Insyte

September 2007 - AlanDick’s RCI (Radar & Communications Infrastructure) Group has landed a contract with BAE Insyte for the turnkey design, manufacture and build of a replacement GBAD (Ground Based Air Defence) Simulator dome, which is to be located at MOD North Luffenham in Rutland. The dome which replaces existing structures at RAF Honington, Woolwich and Sennalager in Germany will be used by the British army for essential training activities – it is scheduled to be up and running by the New Year.

AlanDick’s RCI team has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with BAE over the last few years - with several maintenance projects carried out at Honington and Woolwich. This award follows over a year of support activity to BAE to ensure that it was successful in winning the prime contract for the sensitive electronic simulation equipment.

“Initially the tender was to relocate one of the existing dome structures, but as time went on it became apparent that this was not the preferred solution of the end user. We were given the opportunity to tender for a repeat dome of the type already installed, but due to concerns over ownership of the design rights we chose to design a brand new segmented geometry structure; doing this allowed a number of improvements and enhancements to be incorporated,” said David Herd, RCI Group Manager.

The contract includes a double skinned GRP structure with an inner dome of 17m diameter – this dome requires a perfect internal surface for the projection of the scenery images for simulation activities. The outer dome, at 18m diameter, provides the full weather protection and will enable the dome to be operational for up to 25 years with only minimal maintenance requirements.

In addition to the dome, the contract includes the supply of all civil support works such as foundations, roads and pathways. Power systems and air conditioning are included within the scope as well as full installation, erection and commissioning activities.

The photograph above shows the existing dome at RAF Honington undergoing recent maintenance work – the new dome moves away from the traditional NATO green colouring to the more conservative battleship grey.
