AlanDick’s RCI (Radar & Communications Infrastructure) Group have
completed the delivery and
installation of the replacement
GBAD (Ground Based Air Defence)
Simulator dome, which is to be
located at MOD North Luffenham in
Rutland. The contract, awarded by
BAE Insyte, for the turnkey design,
manufacture and build of the dome
and all support civil works replaces
existing structures at RAF Honington,
Woolwich and Sennalager in Germany.
It shall be used by the British army
for essential training.

The contract included a double skinned GRP structure with an
inner dome of 17m diameter – this
dome required a perfect internal
surface for the projection of the
scenery images for simulation
activities.

The outer dome, at 18m diameter, provides the full weather
protection and will enable the dome
to be operational for up to 25 years
with only minimal maintenance
requirements.
In addition to the dome, the contract included the supply of all
civil support works such as
foundations, roads and pathways.
Power systems and air conditioning
are included within the scope as
well as full installation, erection
and commissioning activities.

The photographs above and below show
the dome during various stages of
its erection. The new dome moves
away from the traditional NATO green
colouring to the more conservative
battleship grey!
